Drink driving: Leave the penalties to England and make sure that you’ll be coming home!
With England successfully through to the Euro final and celebrations starting early across the country before Sunday’s game, make sure you don’t end up with a post-match ban! Drink driving is an offence which carries a disqualification, fine and can even carry a custodial sentence.
Don’t get caught off-side: what are the limits?
The limits are very strict:
- 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath
- 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood
- 107 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine
What are the penalties you should be worried about?
You can expect a disqualification – the minimum disqualification is 12 months, and it can be up to 60 months if you have a previous drink drive offence in the last 10 years.
Depending on the level of alcohol, you will also find yourself fined, subject to a community order or serving a custodial sentence.
Penalties can be imposed if you are found to be ‘in charge’ of a vehicle when over the limit- you don’t even need to have driven the vehicle.
Allow for extra time
Remember- it takes time for alcohol to leave your system. For an average person, it can take more than 12 hours following the consumption of 5 pints of lager to be safe to drive. With the match set for 8:00pm, it does not mean you are below the limit by Monday morning.
